The Drainage Office agreed, on request, to a number
of sewer flushing tanks being disconnected from the mains, and
this has been done. The remainder of these tanks, which the
Engineer in charge of the Drainage Office regards as essential,
have been metered so that leakage or unduly large consumptions
can readily be discovered.

A scheme for subdividing the City into waste detection
basic areas and carrying out the necessary alterations to the
distribution system has been completed. Prices for waste
detection meters with recording apparatus have been obtained
through the Crown Agents, and it is estimated that the cost of
providing and fixing the meters and carrying out the alterations
to the mains and valves is about $145,000, exclusive of the
possible expenditure suggested in paragraph 2. $15,000 has
been requested in the 1938 Public Works Extraordinary Draft
Estimates for the provision of meters, and funds to the extent
of $40,000 are available during 1937 and 1938 for alterations
to the distribution system under the Waterworks $3,000,000
construction programme.

In the new Draft Waterworks Ordinance recently completed
more strict standards have been laid down for all fittings and
workmanship on inside service work. It is hoped that this will
lead to a reduction in leakage on inside services due to defective materials and workmanship.
